“Every time I danced, I thought about the gratitude I had to move my body when simultaneously my mother was bound to a wheelchair. It shifted my perspective on the gift of life.”
– Nicole Tetreault
In this wide-ranging interview, we explore how neuroscientist, author, and meditation teacher Nicole Tetreault managed to step across what was once a great divide. Nicole started her adult life studying neuroscience, hoping to understand the mechanism for her mother’s Parkinson’s and hopefully be part of discovering a cure. At the same time, Nicole’s Catholic upbringing had instilled in her a deep sense of wonder and faith. The more Nicole learned about the brain, the more she felt compelled to combine the materialist world of science with what she felt deeply as a matter of faith.
We explore Nicole’s education, how learning about her own hidden dyslexia was like “fireworks,” and her work helping educators understand children who learn differently. We learn how Nicole’s experiences with cancer and motherhood informed her embrace of the world beyond scientific proof. And Nicole shares with us the way meditation can help us rewire our minds away from the noise and negativity of modern life. [Click for transcript]
“Wiring our minds for love means moving out of fear states and moving into trust states. Fear is a normal part of our life—it’s not going to ever not exist. At the same time, we can have the awareness of how we interact with it, especially being raised in a culture that sells us stuff, sells us everything based on the fear of never being enough.”
